L 01 – Land of the Legends

home > local safaris > L 01 – land of the legends

Introduction

Pamper body and soul with a brief, 2½ day weekend (½ a days leave) escape from the insanity of the working week and join us in exploring the magnificent Soutpansberg region with its breathtaking mountain views and cool, soothing forests, both plantation and indigenous. We visit the legendary Lake Funduzi where, up until as recently as the 1980s, young maidens were sacrificed to the water gods. A forest picnic spot, serenaded by the murmur of crystal clear waterfalls, awaits the intrepid travelers as they break for a well deserved lunch. Explore the Venda Lake District and see the ancient, giant cycads atop the Soutpansberg at the aptly named Buzzards Retreat (± 5400 feet above sea level).

Date of tour

  • 01 Feb 2008 – 03 Feb 2008
  • 15 Feb 2008 – 17 Feb 2008

Friday – Camp Africa

Guests can leave Midrand after lunch and still meet Koos and Issie Moorcroft, of Africa Bushcraft and Survival Adventures, at Camp Africa, a forest retreat at Machado (Louis Trichardt), in time for supper. Spend an enjoyable night camping under the stars in the forest or sleeping in comfortable six-bed forestry huts, dinner and breakfast included. Camp Africa’s forest camp site is grassed with neat, clean ablutions (hot and cold water) and a wonderfully quaint forest pub, a very welcome retreat for thirsty adventurers.

Saturday – Venda Day Trip

Depart with your tour guides Koos and Issie up the mountain trail through indigenous forests and follow the forest route over the mountains, heading North and then East along Blue Gum Poort where tall Blue Gums, over one hundred years old, line the gravel road. We then follow the road to Funduzi Lake, the place of ancient sacrifices. The route now winds through planted forests and finally through a sacred indigenous forest where we will stop for a picnic lunch.

After lunch at a crystal clear mountain pool with a waterfall we follow a winding route through plantation forests, passing beautiful lake areas before returning to our base at Camp Africa where the frosted welcome of the Eagles Nest Forest Pub awaits. Our thirst quenched it’s time to savor a delicious potjie prepared by the bush chef of Camp Africa.

Sunday – Buzzard Retreat

Fortified by a hearty breakfast, we travel up a slowly winding 4x4 Mountain Pass to an altitude of 5400 feet above sea level. This is Buzzard Retreat and we’re here to enjoy the spectacular view it affords us of the countryside below.

Breathe in the crystal clear mountain air while you marvel at the magnificent, ancient cycads and other plants that adorn the summit and where the majestic Crowned Eagle, Black Eagle and various raptors spread their wings in flight. Our senses sated we follow the route down the other side of the mountain through a game farm stopping only to enjoy a picnic lunch at the Hanglip picnic area. Sadly it is now time to depart the these magnificent mountains and head back to Camp Africa to bid adieu to the Soutpansberg while taking with us indelible memories of an extraordinary weekend.
