Introduction

The awesome Sani Pass beckons, drawing adventures all, just as it has done since 1956. For those yet to experience this marvel the time to do so is now, Sani Pass is to soon be tarred! Join us as we explore Lesotho, the roof of Africa, with its colorful riders on their hardy Basuto ponies, the huge Katse Dam as well as the magnificent scenery comprising sparkling waterfalls, rivers and majestic mountains. Step back in time and experience the long forgotten era of the steam locomotive by embarking on an unforgettable early morning train journey riding a private railway line at Sandstone Estates. The Roof of Africa, Lesotho Experience, offers all an ideal short 3½ day escape from today’s frenetic lifestyle.

2007 Tour Dates

  • 25 Apr 2008 – 28 Apr 2008

Day 1

Guests can leave Midrand at 12h00 and still make the 18h00 rendezvous at “The Ark” which is a lodge situated high up in the mountains at Clarens in the Free State. After sundowners in the quaint lodge pub, travelers get to savour a home-made stew that will long be remembered. Fed and well-watered, with an exciting day ahead, it’s time for the cozy comfort of over-nighting at The Ark.

Day 2

After a restful night and hearty breakfast we depart for Sandstone Estates, home to one of the largest Heritage collections of steam locomotives and veteran tractors in the world. Here we relive the age old experience of a narrow gauge steam train journey through one of the most beautiful and modern farms in Africa.

With the memory of the train ride still fresh in our minds we cross the Lesotho Border and head south up the mountain following the Maloti route towards the famous Katse Dam. We spend the evening in the Katse Village lodge and once again enjoy a well prepared dinner.

Day 3

We depart after a good night’s rest and journey South East to enjoy a picnic breakfast on the banks of the Sengu River, the source of the Orange River. After breakfast we continue to the Sani Top Chalet at the head of the Sani Pass, 9700ft above sea level. Arriving early we have ample time to book in, refresh and then proceed down the Sani Pass and then experience the slow drive back up to the highest Pub in Africa where we will take a group photo and enjoy well earned sun-downers.

Guests are then free to relax around a log fire in the lodge and reflect on what they have seen in the lovely rugged, harsh Lesotho thus far. After a home cooked meal we can enjoy gluwine to warm the heart, and retire to a cosy bed.

Day 4

After enjoying a tasty breakfast, we move on and pass Thabana-Ntlenyana the highest African Mountain south of Kilimanjaro while heading towards Tlaeeng Pass, which is the highest motorable pass in Africa. Later we pass the Ski Slope of Afi Ski where, failing all, you will see snow. We then head down past Ox Bow and the Moteng Pass and view, at certain times of the year, a frozen waterfall. Crossing the border back into South Africa at Caledonspoort near Fouriesburg, we say our farewells and depart for home.
