SB02 - 3 Rivers Safari
home > small
bus tours > 3 rivers safari
Introduction
The
Okavango River rises as the Kubango just south of
Vila Nova, Angola, on the Bié Plateau, at an elevation of
5,840 feet (1,780 m). It flows south and then
southeastward through Angola in a course that is initially
broken by rapids. Along its middle course the Okavango
forms part of the Angola/Namibia-border. After being
joined by its largest tributary, the Kwito River, the
Okavango River then crosses Namibia’s narrow Caprivi
Strip to enter Botswana.
The Zambezi
River is Africa’s fourth largest River system, after
the Nile, Zaire and Niger Rivers. It runs through six
countries on it’s journey from central Africa to the
Indian Ocean. Its unique value is that it is less
developed than others in terms of human settlement and
many areas along it’s banks enjoy protected status. It's
power has carved the spectacular Victoria Falls and the
zigzagging Batoka Gorge.
The Chobe
River forms the northern boundary and in the extreme
southwest corner it borders onto Moremi Game Reserve. The
primary function of Chobe National Park is the protection
of the full range of southern Africa's large predators, as
well as the localized puku antelope and migratory elephant
population, which can number up to 70 000.

| Day 1 |
Leave
Pretoria early morning and drive on the N1 to
Mokopane and then follow the N11 to Martin's Drift
Border Post. About 100km from the borderyou
turn off towards Palapye.
At
Palapye you turn towards Serowe where you turn right
towards Letlhakane for about 25km to your first
overnight stop at Khama
Rhino Sanctuary. Serowe, one of the
largest traditional villages in Africa, is the
birthplace of Botswana's first president, the late
Sir Seretse Khama. Covering approximately 4
300 hectares of Kalahari Sandveld, the sanctuary is
centred around Serowe Pan - a large grass-covered
depression with several natural water holes.
To
date, 14 white rhinos and 2 black rhinos have been
translocated into the sanctuary.
In
February 1993, four rhinos were translocated from
Northern Botswana. Other mammals include:
zebra, blue wildebeest, giraffe, eland, springbok,
impala, gemsbok, kudu, steenbok, duiker, red
hartebeest, waterbuck, warthog, leopard, ostrich,
african wild cat, caracal, small spotted genet,
black-backed jackal, bat-eared fox, brown
hyena. Over 230 bird species have also been
identified here including abdim's stork and bearded
woodpecker.
We
will camp here for one night only.
(Camping,
game drive, dinner and breakfast included in
package)

Day 2 |
Early the next morning, we leave via
Letlhakane and Orapa for Maun, situated at the
gateway to the Okavango Delta. Maun is the
tourism capital of Botswana and the administrative
centre of Ngamiland. It is also the
headquarters of countless safari and air-charter
operations whose signs and offices dot almost every
intersection, particularly towards the
airport.
Since
the town's establishment in 1915 as the tribal
capital of the Batawana people, Maun has had a rough
and ready reputation as a hard-living "wild
west" town, servicing the local cattle ranching
and hunting operations. But with the growth of
the tourism industry and the completion of the tar
road from NATA
in the early 1990's, Maun has developed rapidly,
losing much of its old frontier town
character. It is now home to over 30 000
people.
Here
you will overnight at the ISLAND
SAFARI LODGE, situated along the banks of
the Thamalakane River in Maun, the gateway to the
Okavango Delta.
Here
we will camp for one night only.
(Camping, dinner and
breakfast included in package) |
Day 3
Day 4
Day 5
|
After a relaxing morning
we can head North towards our next overnight stopover
in Namibia.
We will stay over at NGEPI
CAMP for the next 2 days, our Okavango
Swamp destination, built on an island in the northern
reaches of the Okavango Delta - panhandle in the
Caprivi Strip Namibia, offers private and overland
campsites with all facilities & stunning en suite
tree-houses where your feet are "in" nature
- on the river. Activities like the unique
"floating swimming" pool in the river,
mokoro safari's, boat cruises, fishing, bird/village
walks, game drives, bushman art trip, visits to Popa
Falls, lawn & shade awaits you.
We
will stay here for 3 nights
(camping, sunset
game drive, dinner and breakfast included in package)
|
Day 6
Day 7
|
After
a cup of coffee, we will depart for the small town
of Bagani, fill up the vehicle and start our long
drive through the Caprivi Strip to Katima
Mulilo. A total distance of 372km. At
Katima we will stock our food supplies and drinks
(no bar facilities at lodge). From here we
will drive a few kilo's to the Zambia border and our
next stopover at SAKAZIMA
ISLAND LODGE.
To
enter Zambia is a very time consuming process and we
need to pay for things like: "3rd party
insurance, carbon tax, and district council
fees". At the border post everything goes
very slow and you will experience Africa at its
best. Then the last 25km to Sakazima.(meaning:
"fire on the water" - this you will
understand better when standing on the deck at the
lodge with a drink with sunset).
On
the shore of the Zambezi we will unload everything
from the vehicle that needs to go with us to the
lodge, load everything on the ferry and we will be
transported to the lodge, a few hundred meters away.
This
will be the only lodge accommodation during our
safari and everybody sleeps in a 2 bed en-suite
chalet, each with a veranda facing the
water.
We
make uese of the lodge kitchen facilities and the
lodge staff will assist with cleaning etc.
For
those interested in fishing, bring your own small
fishing rod or hire at the lodge. Try your
hand at tiger fishing in the Zambezi River.
This is also an excellent birding area.
Here
we will stay for two nights.
(Lodge
accommodation, dinner, breakfast, sunset boat ride
on Zambezi included in package)

Day 8 Day
9 |
Today we have a early
start, load the vehicle and leave for a visit to the VICTORIA
FALLS, one of the seven wonders of the
world, and as David Livingstone said in 1855 when he
discovered the falls: "It is the
most wonderfull site I have ever witnessed in
Africa. Scenes son lovely must have been gazed
upon by angles in their flight....."
After our visit to the
falls, its again time to drive back in the direction
of Shesheke to Kazungula where we will leave Zambia
with the ferry over the Zambezi River to
Botswana. This is also the only place in Africa
where the borders of 4 different countries come
together.
Through the border post
we will drive to Kasane where we will stay at the CHOBE
SAFARI LODGE for the next 2 days.
Chobe Safari Lodge is situated in Kasane on the banks
of the Chobe River and sharing a border with Chobe
National Park. Right on our doorstep four
African countries (Botswana, Namibia, Zimbabwe and
Zambia) meet.
(Camping, Dinner,
Breakfast, Sunset boat cruise included in package)
|
| Day
10 |
Today we will start
driving down south back in the direction of South
Africa.
From the small town
of Pandamatenga down to Nata the road is in a very
poor condition and it helps a lot if you can point
out the difference between the ears of a kudu and
that of a donkey. This will give you estimation on
the depth of the potholes.
From Nata it is all
good driving towards Francistown, our next campsite
at WOODLANDS STOPOVER.
About 10km from Francistown you will see the
turn off sign on your left.
Here
we will stay only one night.
(Camping, dinner,
breakfast included in package) |
| Day
11 |
Your
travels will today take you through Francistown,
driving towards the small town, Phalapaye where we
will turn off towards the Martin's Drift Border Post
and our accommodation at KWA
NOKENG LODGE.
Here
we will stay over for one night.
(Camping,
Dinner, Breakfast included in package) |
Day
12
|
After breakfast it is time to drive back to
civilization. We will enter South Africa at
Martin's Drift Border Post. Our
drive via the N1, back to Pretoria will take about 4
- 5 hours and we can expect to be back in Pretoria
by 14:30. Everybody will be returned safely to
the guesthouses or to the airport if needed. |
