 SB 03 - Kruger Swazi Escarpment Tour ( 9 days )

home > small bus tours > kruger swazi escarpment tour 9days

Introduction

Staying in Kruger National Park or one of the surrounding private game reserves is ideal during a visit to South Africa. The safari and game lodges range from artistically elegant to super luxurious with en-suite bathroom facilities. The expert game rangers whisk you off on game drives and walking safaris, tracking the wildlife in their natural habitat.

The Kingdom of Swaziland is old, peaceful, incredibly varied - and unique - it is the last traditional kingdom in Africa. The cheerful, friendly Swazi people have preserved their rich culture and traditions as a vital element in their day to day lives and colourful, mystical ceremonies are held every year to celebrate the Swazi traditions.

Itinerary

Day 0

Clients will fly in to O.R.Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg ( South Africa ).  Andre van Vuuren, Director of Explore Africa , registered tour & safari guide, will meet clients at the O.R.Tambo International Airport and transport clients to their respected Guesthouses.  (Transport from Airport to Guesthouse included in package.)

Day 1

Day 2

We will leave early morning and drive on the N4 to Mpumalanga and our first overnight stop in Sabie.  SABIE RIVER CAMP is an ideal stopover or base from which to explore the scenic beauty of the Mpumalanga Drakensberg, Kruger National Park and the Lowveld. Conveniently located Sabie River Camp is a family resort on the banks of the Sabie River , close to the Sabie Falls on the outskirts of Sabie. Here - on the banks of the Sabie River - you will be hushed to sleep at night by the sound of gurgling water in your pre-erected self-catering tents. We will also visit some of the beautiful waterfalls in the area, Pilgrim’s Rest, God’s Window and many more during our stay in Sabie.

We will stay here for two nights.  (Pre-Erected Tents, Breakfast included in package.)

Day 3

Day 4

After breakfast we will leave for Maduma Boma Game Concervancy, our next overnight stop. Here will be able to sit quietly at one of the many hides and dams situated on the farm and watch the abundant bird life busy with their daily routine. Lunch is spent around your own private swimming pool, swimming and soaking up the sun, while a mother warthog and her kids visit you for tea.
At dusk, the Drakensberg Mountains are awash with red - sundowners defined. In the evening, you enjoy a 'bushveld braai'. You spend the evening around the fire, relaying the days stories. After the sun goes down, the night comes alive. The lonely call of the Hyena, the bark of the hungry Jackal and the Owl's hoot and the piercing call of the Night Jar. This is the time to sit and stare at the southern night sky, and then you realize that this has to be God's own country
.

The following day we will visit the Moholoholo Rehabilitation Centre. This centre was started in 1992 on a game farm nestling in a picturesque setting at the base of the Drakensberg escarpment in South Africa ’s Limpopo Province . Brian Jones, the owner/manager, had a Crowned Eagle when he first arrived at the Centre and soon after, a day-old Zebra arrived in need of care and from this small beginning a rehabilitation centre that has been featured in National Geographic has become world renowned. Wildlife is brought to the centre from all corners of South Africa , and once healthy enough are re-introduced into their natural environments. Those creatures that cannot be returned to the wild due to the nature and extent of their injuries are cared for at the centre and are used to educate the many people who visit the centre every year.
We will stay here for two nights.  (Chalets, Breakfast included in package.)

Day 5

Day 6

After an early morning breakfast we leave for the Kruger National Park , nearly 2 million hectares of unrivalled diversity of life forms fuses with historical and archaeological sights – this is real Africa .  The world-renowned Kruger National Park offers a wildlife experience that ranks with the best in Africa . Established in 1898 to protect the wildlife of the South African Lowveld. Truly the flagship of the South African national parks, Kruger is home to an impressive number of species: 336 trees, 49 fish, 34 amphibians, 114 reptiles, 507 birds and 147 mammals. Man's interaction with the Lowveld environment over many centuries - from bushman rock paintings to majestic archaeological sites like Masorini and Thulamela - is very evident in the Kruger National Park. These treasures represent the cultures, persons and events that played a role in the history of the Kruger National Park and are conserved along with the park's natural assets.

The Satara Rest Camp is situated in an excellent game viewing area, with the bush relatively open and the animals plentiful and diverse. The camp itself has a rustic charm, with the bulk of the accommodation set out in a series of circles. Satara is well wooded and the bird-life is prolific. At night the clink of fruit bats is fused with the chirping of cicadas and crickets. The calls of owls and nightjars add to the symphony that is punctuated intermittently by the whoop of hyena, the screech of jackal and the roars of lion. After breakfast, we will have the last opportunity for some game viewing on our way out as we leave the Kruger National Park at the Kruger Gate for our next overnight stop at Witrivier Lodge.

We will stay here for one night.  (Chalets, Breakfast included in package.)

Day 7

Today we will drive via Nelspruit and Barberton to the Bulembu border post where we will enter the Kingdom of Swaziland. A landlocked country in Southern Africa, bordered to the north, south, and west by South Africa, and to the east by Mozambique. The nation, as well as its people, are named after the 19th century king Mswati II.

We will visit the Coral Stephens Handweaving studio in Piggs Peak which specialized initially in mohair products. Our next stop will be at the Ngwenya Glass Factory

(S26 13.328 E31 01.891) here a small group of Swazi craftsmen and women - with age old artistry - breath life into enchanting interpretations of the animals and birds of Africa, imbuing each with its own irresistible personality. You will witness first-hand the magical art of glassblowing from an overhead balcony. Each item handmade from 100 % recycled glass! From here we will drive to our overnight stop at Forester’s Arms, a short, scenic, tarred drive from the capital, Mbabane. The hotel is situated on 90 ha of beautiful Swaziland highlands in the heart of the Kingdom.

We will stay here for one night.  (Chalets, Breakfast included in package.)

Day 8

After breakfast we will leave for Swazi Candles where we will look at the fine handmade candles manufactured since 1981. The artists and craftsmen produce unique candle designs which are renowned throughout the world. Our last overnight stop will be at the Forever Resorts Badplaas with it’s superb Hydro Spa set in a game reserve in warm Mpumalanga. Remember to bring your bathing suite and towel so that we can enjoy a relaxing evening in the Hydro Spa.

We will stay here for one night.  (Hotel room, Breakfast included in package.)

Day 9

Today is the end of our tour and we will drive back to Pretoria. We will drive through Carolina and Middelburg on our way home and plan to be back in Pretoria by mid afternoon.
