home > self drive safaris > sd 03 – jewel of africa safari
Introduction
Botswana, also referred to as "The Real Africa", is notoriously rich in wildlife, and is a destination not to be missed.
This beautiful country boasts some of Africa's prime Nature reserves such as The Nxai and Makgadigadi Pans National Park, the Moremi Game Reserve (Jewel of Africa)
and The Chobe National Park.
Explore Africa is probably the only South African Tour Operator in Possession of a Botswana Tourism Enterprise Licence and is proud to have put together a safari package which includes a sufficient visit to all these reserves and a two day stop over at The Victoria Falls

Itinerary
| Day 1 |
Meet and Greet
We leave via the Martins drift Border post between Botswana and South Africa for the Nata Lodge where we will spend the first night. It's quite a long drive from Gauteng (800km) but the roads are in good condition and it is worthwhile since "the real Botswana starts here". |
| Day 2 |
Maun
On our way to Maun (300km) we will turn off to the Nxai Pans National Park where we will make a light brunch at Baines Baobabs. Bains Baobabs were named after the famous explorer, Thomas Baines who painted the baobabs on the 22nd of May 1862. Interesting to note that in the 143 years that have since passed, there is little evidence of any change in the seven giants. After brunch we continue our journey to Maun where we will overnight at Sitatunga Camp. There is a beautiful pool , pub and restaurant. If there is a demand for it, we can organize a one-hour scenic game flight with a fixed wing aircraft over Chiefs Island and the Okavango swamps. |
Day 3
Day 4
Day 5
Day 6 |
Moremi Game Reserve
We stock up with fuel, ice and some last minute shopping before we depart via Shorobe and the Buffalo Fence for the Moremi Game Reserve – The Jewel of Africa – in the heart of the Okavango delta. The Moremi forms an integral part of the Okavango Delta, comprising permanently swamped areas and dry land. It is probably the prime tourist destination in Botswana.
Moremi is perfect wildlife area where elephant, hippo, lion, giraffe and most other game can be seen in abundance. We will stay in Xakanaxa Camp for three nights and at Kwai Camp for one night. Khwai Camp is situated on the banks of the Khwai River and is one of the best game viewing areas of the Botswana. Daily activities will include:
- 4x4 Game Drives
- A sunset boat cruise on the waterways of the Okavango Delta
- Bird watching
- Brunches in the bush
Sundowners and unforgettable nights around the campfire. |
| Day 7 |
Chobe National Park
We leave for the Savuti in the Chobe National Park on our way to Kasane. It is almost impossible to imagine that this desolate, harsh landscape was once submerged beneath an enormous inland sea. The Savuti area is one of the most photographed areas in the whole of Africa and most of the Africa Wildlife Videos (Derek and Beverly Joubert's "Eternal enemies") and others were filmed here. We will stay over in Savuti Camp for the night. |
| Day 8 |
Kasane
We travel through the Sand Ridge and Teak Forests via Kachikau to Kasane where we will overnight in Luxury at The Chobe Safari Lodge, which has an outstanding campsite and ablutions, hot water showers, a swimming pool and a charismatic pub overlooking the Chobe River. |
| Day 9 |
Chobe Safari Lodge
We will spend today at the Chobe. The Chobe is proud and very famous for its abundance of elephants – the highest concentration to be found anywhere in Africa. The Chobe is also famous for its huge herds of buffalo, for its rich bird life and, not least for its boat cruises and exquisite sunsets – an Africa experience not to be missed.
We spend the night again at The Chobe Safari Lodge. |
Day 10
Day 11 |
Zambezi Waterfront
We leave early morning via the ferry (Pontoon Boat) at Kazangula - where the four countries meet, for Livingstone in Zambia for a visit to the Victoria Falls. The Victoria Falls is approximately 1690m wide and varies in height from 62m at the "Devils Cataract" to 109m at the "Eastern Cataract", this seems to dwarf the Niagara falls which is approximately 968m wide with an average height of 54m. Various activities such as;
- Bungee Jumping
- white Water Rafting
- Jet Boating
- Helicopter Flights
- and Microlight Flights
are available at the Victoria Falls. We will spend two nights at the Zambezi Waterfront in Livingstone. |
| Day 12 |
Nata Lodge
We leave for Nata on our way back to South Africa, and overnight in the campsite at Nata Lodge. For the guests who do not want to camp, there is the option to stay in one of the chalets. |
| Day 13 |
This is the end of an incredible safari and we are on our way home. |
