SD 08 – Kubu Island Getaway

home > self drive safaris > sd 08 – kubu island getaway

Introduction

This vast sea of sand has, for centuries, captured man's imagination. Although the Kalahari is largely uninhabited, it is not a true desert for it is home to a large number of plant and animal species that have managed to adapt to its inhospitable conditions.

Itinerary

Day 1

Meet and Greet

A fully qualified safari guide will meet you at the Groblersbrug border post between South Africa and Botswana . "KwaNokeng" an overnight lodge and campsite, located at the border (Botswana Side) will be the ideal lodging for the previous night and can be contacted by e-mail: clinton@botsnet.bw or telephonically on (09267) 491 5927. Visit their Website at www.knl.co.za.

Today we cross the Makgadigadi Pans to Kubu Island where we will spend the night in the community campsite. Kubu (meaning hippopotamus in Setswana) is the most famous of all the rock islands in the Makgadikgadi. Most of the rock islands in this area are remnants of ancient sand dunes. Kubu island is different in that it is one of the scatterings of granite islands. Kubu Island rises no more than 20 meters above the pan and is a national monument. Its eerily silent fossil beaches, stunted red baobab trees and mysterious stone walls leave an impression on every visitor. Most of the rocks on Kubu Island are stained white by fossilized bird droppings, bearing testament to the long-forgotten bird population that once lived on the island.

Day 2

Kubu Island

We will spend the day exploring Kubu Island and the surrounding Makgadikgadi Pans which consists mainly of series fossil salt pans. On the pans are "islands" covered with short, nutritious grasses. This makes for beautiful scenery and is unique to the Pans. We will spend the night again in our mobile campsite on the Island .

Day 3

Khama Rhino Sanctuary

We leave for Khama Rhino Sanctuary close to Serowe where we will camp for the last night in Botswana , under beautiful Manketi trees. For those guests who would prefer not to camp, the option is available to stay in one of the chalets, for more information or to book a chalet email krst@botsnet.bw.

Day 4

Homeward bound

This is the end of our Kalahari Safari experience, we leave via the Martinsdrift border post back to South Africa .
